Social media is a continuously evolving system, trends come and go and sometimes it gets difficult to keep track of all of it. Instagram is a particularly well-known app for gathering all the trends and lifestyle updates in one place.
This photo posting app also has a feature of Instagram Stories. You can easily connect with your friends, family and people around the globe by just hitting the follow button. Once you have followed them, you can view and like their photos, videos, and stories they share.
Instagram Stories have become one of the most popular features of the social media platform, Like Snapchat Stories, Instagram Stories only appear on your feed for 24 hours, or until the person who posted the Story deletes it.
What is a Story on Instagram?
The stories are displayed as a short slideshow at the top of your feed. This published content is available for anyone considering the account’s privacy settings. However, the followers can view it as many times as they like. Keep in mind that once it reaches an expiration limit of 24-hours, the story disappears automatically.
This time limit adds an interesting factor and the fear of missing out pushes the users to keep checking the app over and over again earning traffic. Whether it is your story or someone else’s, it will only last 24 hours window unless it is turned into a Highlight. It also encourages users to post their stories more often, and they can be saved there as a permanent record.
Can you view your old Instagram Stories?
Additionally, if you happen to post a story but it expires before you get a chance to save the video, worry not…you can still recover it. Unlike Snapchat Stories, Instagram Stories will just disappear from your feed after 24 hours but they remain archived in the app. In short, you can access your old Instagram Stories even after the expiration limit. Here’s how:
- Simply go to your profile and tap on the three lines icon on the top right.
- Next, tap Archive. Navigate to “Story Archive” on top of the screen.
If it is a Highlight, it will remain until you remove it. That way the story will last for more than the deadline and you can have access to it later.
How to view someone’s old Instagram Stories
Sometimes you miss out on some story posted by one of the Instagram users you love. And your friend mentioned it to you after it has expired. But is that Instagram Story has gone forever, or can you view someone’s old Instagram stories? The short answer is no you cannot view someone’s old Instagram Stories unless they saved it as a Highlight.
In other words, if they choose to not add it as a Highlight to their profile, it won’t be saved. Consequently, you won’t have any access to their Story.
In this guide, we will tell you how to view someone’s old Instagram Stories. Let’s start with the basics first for new users.
How to access someone’s Story
- Open your Instagram profile. Go to the top of your home page.
- Navigate the user’s profile for whom you want to watch the Story.
Method 1: Access old Stories on Highlights
You can check the user’s profile to access the Story they added to Highlights. It will remain on their profile until the user deletes it. It is a permanent option for displaying the best content. Here’s how you can view it:
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Now, navigate the profile you want to view Highlights of.
- On their profile page, look below their profile information. You should see a row of circles. Tap any to view any Highlight provided.
To save and download an old Story, you need to take its screenshot but be ensured that your friend will be notified that you took the screenshot of their story.
Method 2: Screen Record or take a Screenshot
Assuming you are looking to save someone else’s Instagram Story for future reference. You can screen record or screenshot the content during the 24-hour active period. You may wonder if Instagram will notify another user that you have captured the content.
There is a lot of debate about this, but as of right now you are in the clear to take undetected screenshots of Instagram Stories. However, Instagram has changed this several times through the years and it keeps updating the privacy settings. Our advice is to test it out on a friend before taking a screenshot of someone who you would rather your activities stay anonymous.
Now that you have been warned. You should also be aware that you are most likely breaking Instagram’s privacy rules. The legalities of it will render you guilty and it is akin to invading privacy. So, unless you have permission from the Instagram user, you shouldn’t be recording.
Method 3: Sharing the Story
Alternatively to save someone’s story is to ask the other user to share the story with you by tagging it with your username. Also, you can DM the person to appreciate the story and ask them to share it with you. Or ask them to repost the story so that you can watch it again. The stories disappear from the profile after 24 hrs by default but are saved in the Archives section of your profile. You can always retrieve it from there.
Method 4: Screenshot alternative
You can get a little more creative to evade screenshot privacy issues. Websites like Stories allows you to view other people’s stories and download them. When searching for these websites, be careful to read the reviews. You will need to permit them to access your IG account and information.
You just have to enter someone’s username and the website will find all their active Stories. From there, just select the Story you want to save and click “Download.” It also has the option to share them further anywhere and allows you to view stories anonymously. If you want to remain anonymous while looking at a friend’s post, you need to do your research to use a website of that sort.
Note: This won’t give you access to expired Stories, but if you catch them within the 24 hours since they were published, you’re good to go. This website also works on mobile devices
Method 5: Other Social Media Platforms
Nowadays, people do not stick to only one social media app. They use other platforms, including Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat, etc. So if you missed the stories on Instagram, you may watch them through another app if you connect to the user. As various social media brands provide options to share the same stories or post on other platforms.
So to sum it up, you can retrieve your old Stories from Archives easily. However, it is a lot trickier to watch someone’s old Stories without them being saved as Highlights. Or use a website made for saving IG Stories or a screen recorder on your mobile device.
If you are lucky enough, you can find someone’s old Instagram stories there in the Highlight section; otherwise, the Story just disappeared after finishing its 24-hour duration.
We hope it helps!
